The Last Kiss

February26

This movie is about the destruction of relationships and where you go from there. Not the most cheery of movies. You would think it’s a chick flick but it’s not so straight forward. It follows the lives of four near 30 year old men who have known each other as far back as pre-school. All seem to be having an early midlife crisis. In any other movie the guys would be painted as jerks but this movie gave them some sympathy. After the movie was done I realized there was no role in religion in their lives. Everyone was struggling to weigh out their values in their own way. It’s true that religion can be used to harm people and because of recent events we are constantly reminded of that. However religion can offer safety as well. The main character doesn’t want to marry his girlfriend and doesn’t want to buy a house with her in fear that it’s too “final”. He does love her. When his girlfriend gets pregnant he feels trapped and confused and somehow decides he needs to cheat. Now the idea of a man impregnating the woman he loves but then refusing her a marriage, a joint settled home and then going out and cheating on her because he’s confused is unsettling to me. He realizes his errors at the end but I can’t help but think a man of faith (any faith) would have certain values already settled in his mind. There’s also a side story of the parents of the pregnant girlfriend. Her mother is having difficulty aging and doesn’t feel wanted by her husband.

It’s a good movie if you want to think about relationships. I think it’s pretty important to at least be exposed to the viewpoints of people you would readily consider to be jerks. The new rating system is not up yet.

While this has nothing to do with a movie, I heard a news item today that you may/may not have heard of, but would most likely be interested in. I just want to say that I have played against many teams with women who wear hijabs, and I have found them in no way to be a danger to either player or opponent.

Such things are really difficult to endure for me. I am an adult (since fairly recently). That 11 year old girl must be feeling pretty overwhelmed right now. I didn’t realize the referee was a muslim until Mohammad pointed it out and I reread the article. That fact is very discouraging. I’ve played sports with hijab and it was fine. Pictures of the girl in question show that she wore it in a reasonable fashion such that it was snug against her head and tucked in underneath her shirt and not flowing in the wind etc. It’s quite difficult to get muslim kids to participate in extra-curricular sporting activities, especially girls. I am concerned that this incident will act as another excuse for parents not to let their kids participate. I’m not exactly sure why Quebec Muslims are facing such a tough time. This is just one of a few different issues that have come up lately.

Ugh. I just saw on TV that Fifa upheld the ruling. That is horrible. There is absolutely no danger to the player or other players. I see girls wear glasses when they play and that freaks me out. Why glasses, but no hijab? Aren’t glasses “headgear”, which is banned? The only thing I wonder about hijab/long sleeves/long pants is the heat in the summer, which I’m sure that you become accustomed to very quickly. I’m checking in with WWSL to see what their policy will be. Hopefully, they will continue to allow hijabs, as they have done so for many years.

it’ll be interesting to see if canadian officials will follow the ban.

Well, I know that Quebec will. As for Manitoba, I don’t know. I hope that they respect the right to wear hijab. I think the Winnipeg Women’s Soccer League (WWSL) will respect it, as they have in the past. It will really be up to the different leagues, and there are so many. What is really sad is that I saw a newscast where they interviewed the girl. She has aspirations to play internationally, and this ruling, if continued, will quash those dreams.

BTW, three more weeks left in my teaching block, and then we can resume our tasty lunch rendezvous!
