Bangkok on Broadway

October26

336 Broadway

I really like Thai food. Aside from the heavy coconut milk stuff I think it’s wonderfully flavourful and healthy. If I worked in downtown I would love going there for lunch every once in a while for a treat. The decor is food court with culture. You have a wonderful view for people watching as well. I ate something with veggies and chicken but I forgot what it was called. Tipu had shrimp and chicken with veggies. Both dishes came with rice and salad. It was really filling and satisfying. I wish I could have eaten more but I was full. The dishes we chose were spicy but we asked for it to be prepared that way. I’m not sure if it’s usually that spicy or not.

Hey Is this Mariam K.’s place?? It’s up and running already??? I’m really sad I didn’t get to hang with you more on Eid. You stink. And I was supposed to get a pic of you in your cute purple outfit but I think you ran away.

Ahh, I went there the day it opened. It was really full, and my friend and I noticed that it was all buffet, which usually equals no spicing, so we turned around and went to Asahi instead. Glad to hear that it was tasty.

    Hmmm…sushi buffets….*starts to drool*

Well, Asahi does not do sushi buffets (but is extremely delicious).

Sakura (in an odd spot off of Kenaston, near Scurfield…you know where the McDonalds is there?…turn right just past it to get to the mall with Sakura) has some decent lunch and dinner sushi (raw fish only available for dinner) along with a regular menu.

Second sushi buffet served tableside that I know of is Miso (formerly Mooshiro’s second location on Pembina). It’s all you can eat sushi which you order up to three at a time from each section on the menu. I believe it’s $22 for dinner. You can get very stuffed, and in order to prevent you from ordering more than you can eat, you’re charged $1 per piece that you leave. The price also includes all other sushi-related stuff like yummy appetizers. Only thing is that it’s still owned by Mooshiro’s owners, just a different concept. If you like Mooshiro’s sushi, you’ll love this, since it’s exactly the same. I have a beef with the way they do my fav roll, bakudan, other than that, the sushi is quite good. This concept is very popular in places like Toronto and Vancouver, and it’s the first offering in Winnipeg. However, in the other cities, tuna is extra, but here it’s all in the price, baby!

New sushi places alert: Umi Sushi is opening in the same general area as Sakura, but by Payless Shoe Source. Don’t know the concept yet or if the interior is cute. But it’s tiny, with two floors it looks like, so there’s a definite cuteness possibility. Shogun Sushi and Sake Bar has also opened in the same area, near the new Pasta La Vista and the Southside Keg. I haven’t gone, but rumor has it that it might be Ichiban related with Japanese Tepanaki being the focus.

Oh yes, and Bangkok on Broadway offers a strictly buffet lunch, which is why I went elsewhere that day.

    what dear is Japanese Tepanaki?

  10. On October 29th, 2006 at 2:11 am Christy Says:

Oops, I spelt it wrong. It’s teppanyaki, and it’s basically different types of meat in yummy sauces (tenderloin, lobster, shrimp, chicken) stir fried on high heat grills (like a sheet of metal) and made to order at your table. It’s done at Ichiban in Winnipeg, and each table has it’s own grill and chef who’s a whiz with juggling knives and such; it really is quite the show. I don’t know if Shogun is like that, but I heard a rumor that it is. Anyway, teppanyaki is another type of Japanese cuisine. It’s all very fresh and delicious. Visit http://www.ichiban.ca to get an idea.

Oh, Shaheen, I missed your earlier comment! I’m so sorry that soccer didn’t work out! My team’s only charging $140 about per player. Unfortunately, the high price is due to a new field built at Highlander (super sweet and state-of-the-art), ref and timekeeper payment, field rental (expensive) and an MSA card (that covers you for insurance purposes). If it’s a new team, they may need to buy some blinged-out jerseys. I know it’s a crazy amount. However, if you’re seriously interested, my team’s pretty good with a payment plan so you don’t have to pay all at once. We do have a spot or two available. We’re a division 3 team, so it’s about middle of the road for competitiveness (although we just tied a division one team in an exhibition game!…don’t worry, we play within our own division in regular season play). Let me know if you’re up for it.
