What is the purpose of tradition? Those who adhere to tradition say that is the result of years of experience. We are taught that true great minds are free-thinkers. They question and explore, challenge and pursue the old idealogies constantly to find truer knowledge.
I saw ABC Nightline last night. It was about Azhar Usman, an American Muslim Comedian. When I saw him and heard his story I saw a man who’s challenging tradition and who in my opinion has found a better way. He’s a lawyer. His wife is too. Through comedy, he has found an art form that allows him to project the ills of our society and encourage dialogue about them. He is in a lonely position I fear, I could tell he’s constantly having to defend his opinions and life choices. I hope he keeps it up though. He’s doing a wonderful job.
I hope it encourages others to think out of the box.
sadiya? you didn’t comment yet? I’ll let you do all the talking. G’on gurrl.
AZHAR IS MY HEEEEEEEEEEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! hehehe mashaAllah. man i should be on nightline! uf. i should GET nightline too. shaheen is my hero for recording nightline for me at one minutes notice! *smiles proudly at shaheen* she’s grrreat! mA

*cues pinky & the brain music*
rebellion is out of the box.
is rebellion bad?
Is out of the box bad?
I like boxes. Some boxes contain tradition. Some boxes contain rebellion. It’s up to you to pick which box you like. Sometimes you will pick both boxes, and sometimes, rebellion isn’t bad. Whatever doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger…except poison.
so why does Z always get comments to her comments? What’s THAT all about? See if *I’M* ever gonna comment again. I think I’m gonna rebel against you and your stupid boxes.

as-salam ‘alaykum:
Actually, that’s kinda funny … b/c Sadia Durrani is MY hero. I heard all about the jelly legs bit from my wife, who attended her show at ISNA last year. Sadia, you need to understand the importance of developing the “women only” world of entertainment for Muslim communities in the West — just like our Chinese Muslims sisters of old developed women-only mosques over the past several hundred years. These are necessary socio-cultural developments that support healthy living for Muslims. Otherwise, the only options that exist are undesirable alternatives, from an orthodox Muslim legal perspective anyway. So kudos to you Sadia, you are a true “gold medalist” (said with a desi accent) in my book.
Cheers!
Azhar Usman
